Redesign: Field Service Report

Mash Millwright had been using a standard Field Service Report form to detail their work on job sites, but it had a few problems. Some fields were redundant; some weren’t used very ofter; others did not have enough space. The client asked for the job description area to be the full width of the page as they often ran out of room writing up a description of the work.

Upon looking at some of their old reports that had been filled in with actual job descriptions, I noticed that most of the notes were in point form. This meant short line lengths, which are also easier to read. Instead of expanding the job description area to the full width of the page, I rotated the report 90º and made the column longer. This meant the other boxes could be reduced in width and stacked on top of each other. Their clients could see a rundown of the parts, time and material used in one column on the right, with mileage tracking along the bottom.

The redesign was put to use and it’s been working very well for Mash Millwright and their customers.
